Crunchyroll To Stop Free Plan With Spring 2022 Anime Lineup

When it comes to watch anime, most of the people in Asia only thinks of Crunchyroll. After Funimation and Crunchyroll merger we expected to see many more anime for free in Crunchyroll. It turns out that Crunchyroll is going all out with paid subscription and there will be no longer any free plans. This will apply to all upcoming spring 2022 lineup.

However it does not mean that the existing anime episodes will be exclusive to paid users. The anime which come after Spring 2022 anime lineup will have this option. The existing ones will be available for free with ad support.

Crunchyroll Premium

The first three episodes of the following spring 2022 titles will be available for free ad-supported viewing for a limited time:

  1. SPY x FAMILY
  2. A Couple of Cuckoos
  3. The Dawn of the Witch
  4. Tomodachi Game
  5. Skeleton Knight in Another World
  6. Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie
  7. The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
  8. Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs

The first three episode will be available for free with ads after a week but it’ll only last long until 31st May 2022 after that you’ll need to have monthly or yearly subscription to watch the further episodes.

Why Crunchyroll Did This?

This move is kind of expected from Crunchyroll. Being free has its own advantage and disadvantages. Nowadays a user can easily bypass any region locked anime with VPN. After bypassing the region lock, you still needed to buy that countries OTT subscription separately but Crunchyroll being free a user doesn’t a subscription to watch that particular anime with subscription as it is already available for free in Crunchyroll in that specific region. People still do this bypassing option with the help of VPNs but they need to spend the money also. Crunchyroll ad system is not that strong to detect if any user is using VPN or not. As it completely free user can make an account for free for that specific region. After doing this, Crunchyroll believes that they can at least tackle these VPN users with ease.

This all means that Crunchyroll is no longer free to watch latest anime titles. You need to have subscription to watch the latest episodes. Still you can watch existing anime titles for free with ads.
